Job Overview:
A world leader in the production of hydrocarbon based energy is building a leading "Unconventional Team" and seeks a Senior Geomechanics Engineer to contribute to their advancement in unconventional gas exploration. Applicants are invited with a minimum of 10 years industry experience with proven skills in 1D and 3D Geomechanics, Real-Time Geomechanics, and well bore stability analysis. Working on a Tax Free, Expat Contract for a minimum of two years in an exciting and challenging role, you will be exposed to a great opportunity to become a leading Geomechanic Specialist within the realms of Unconventional Gas.
The Company has committed to refocusing their business strategy with an emphasis on the development of natural gas. They are pursuing opportunities in unconventional resources, and as such are building a leading technological team of unconventional experts. As part of this commitment they have increased their exploration and production budget by billions ($) largely to develop gas resources and unconventional resource potential. Their objective over forthcoming years is to replace their current oil economy with a natural-gas-based economy. This is a paramount strategy and hence the importance of building a strong experienced "Unconventional Team".
The Company currently operate in excess of 140 rigs and plan to add an additional 37 rigs by the end of this year - predominately for natural gas. But with their commitment to develop gas and unconventional resources, the number of rigs is forecasted to rise extensively over the next few years. In addition, they have invested heavily in recent years in international R&D centres and research alliances to drive their technological advancements and to accelerate their deepwater and shale activities.
Responsibilities: Reporting to Unconventional Gas Team Leader, the role encompasses many functions including:
- Become competent in the Company's exploration program for unconventional resources - understanding their challenges, technologies available etc.
- Contribute to the success of the exploration of unconventional gas resources.
- Work in a multidisciplinary team understanding the challenges and constraints of the objectives at hand, sharing ideas, recommending quality solutions, advancing the technical knowledge of the group.
- Contribute to the following:
- 3D Geomechanics modelling and simulation.
- 1D Mechanical Earth Models and Well Bore Stability studies
- Support drilling operations through real time Geomechanics and Wellbore Stability studies for drilled wells.
- Apply Geomechanical models to optimize fracture stimulation, optimize drilling and well placement; minimize reservoir compaction, surface subsidence and sand production.
- Provide real-time decision support to the drilling team to maximize drilling efficiency and minimize risk while achieving the well objectives.
- Advise clients on drilling, stimulation, and sanding problems issues and solutions through the use of Geomechanics solutions.
- Integrate the Geomechanics solution with other domains in the FDP team.
- Delivery of innovative technology solutions to reduce drilling and completion risk and optimizes reservoir production.
- Describe stresses and mechanical properties for a formation, field, or basin to deliver practical, cost-effective solutions to Geomechanical problems.
- Provide real-time decision support to the drilling team to maximize drilling efficiency and minimize risk while achieving the well objectives.
- Provide active mentoring to the technical community, exploration geoscientists and/or technicians assigned to work on a common project
- Apply your specialist knowledge and experience to discussions with colleagues and third parties to influence work programmes and key decisions.
- Continue to develop your Geomechanical knowledge base especially within unconventional gas. Keep abreast of industry trends and practices.
- Attend relevant seminars/conferences and discussion forums re your speciality.
This Unconventional Team will consist of geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists, reservoir simulation engineers, geomechanic specialists, geomodellers, drilling/completions/stimulations engineers and many more. It is an exciting time to join this prestigious team, contributing to the major advancement of exploration for unconventional resources.
Preferences: The successful candidate will have:
- A degree in Petroleum Geology or Geophysics. MSc or PhD highly preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years oil and gas industry experience essential.
- A strong Geomechanical background essential with proven experience in 1D and 3D Geomechanics; Real-Time Geomechanics; wellbore stability analysis...
- Proven ability to support drilling operations through real time Geomechanics and Well Bore Stability studies for drilled wells

- Ability to apply Geomechanical models to optimize fracture stimulation, optimize drilling and well placement; minimize reservoir compaction, surface subsidence and sand production essential.
- Experience of integrating Geomechanics solutions with FDP.
- A drive to be at the leading edge of technological and work practice advancement within unconventional gas.
- Proven experience using industry standard Geomechanic software essential. Petrel preferred.
- Enjoys working in an integrated and interdisciplinary team essential.
- Excellent communication skills in English with the ability to engage with team players and management in a technically coherent manner essential.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop good working relationships within the team and across the Company as required essential.
- Previous experience working or living in the Middle East advantageous.
- Proactive, flexible and enthusiastic.
