Job Overview: Our Client is a major integrated international energy company engaged in exploration and production; oil sands mining; integrated gas; and refining, marketing and transportation.

As an experienced Geologist, you will analyse seismic and subsurface information, including petrophysical and operational data, to identify prospective areas for new plays. You will accurately compare the relative technical, commercial and strategic merits of competing opportunities.

You will have close interaction and collaboration with the following internal groups: Production, Drilling, Business Development, Land/Commercial, Conventional New Ventures, Technology, Exploration and Economics/Evaluation.

Responsibilities: This role encompasses many functions including:

  • Generate and evaluate new prospect and play opportunities using local and regional data. Make recommendations for drillable plays and prospects by providing geological/geophysical and risk analysis.
  • Creative and technically sound integration of variable datasets to identify opportunities.
  • Organize and participate in peer reviews for source estimates and prospect rank.
  • Monitor and analyze industry activity in targeted areas and recommend appropriate actions. Recommend action on farmout and new play opportunities
  • Interface with all necessary internal groups and organizations to apply best practices to opportunity recommendations.
  • Represent the Company's interest in dealing with partners, vendors and competitors.
  • Clearly communicate and document project results and recommendations.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships within the industry and with other organizations and individuals to expand professional knowledge and develop useful source contacts.
  • Mentor and develop less experienced staff as necessary.

Preferences: The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in an earth science discipline (major discipline geology) essential. MSc preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years oil and gas industry experience essential.
  • Proven experience evaluating new prospect and play opportunities. essential.
  • Ability to make recommendations for drillable plays.
  • Ability to represent Company's interest to partners, vendors and competitors.
  • Knowledge of Gas Shale or fractured shale plays highly desired.
  • Knowledge of structural and facies mapping, seismic interpretation, seismic and sequence stratigraphy.
  • Ability to accurately compare the relative technical, commercial and strategic merits of competing opportunities essential.
  • Computer proficiencies required: Intermediate PC skills are required in Microsoft desktop suites.
  • Previous experience using industry software relating to risk analysis and geological evaluation essential (e.g. Geolog, Geographix, Landmark proficiencies desirable)
  • Be able to demonstrate a history and ability to contribute in a team environment essential.
  • Excellent communications skills with the ability to converse at all levels.
