Principal Ecologist

My client is a growing multi-disciplinary environmental consultancy who work out of 3 UK based offices to provide high quality ecology, arboriculture, landscape architecture and geotechnical services. This organisation is made up of a team of environmental experts who work on a wide range of challenging projects from large scale development, construction and rail sector work to smaller education, healthcare and public sector developments. Due to continued success and upcoming projects, this business requires a Principal Ecologist to join the team in their Basingstoke office.


* Are you a full member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)?
* Do you have proven experience conducting a range of ecological fieldwork including Phase 1 habitat and Protected Species surveys?
* Can you demonstrate thorough understanding of UK wildlife legislation?
* Are you an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills?

Applying for the role of Principal Ecologist, you should be able to meet the above requirements. Further to this, you will have experience designing and implementing mitigation strategies, writing reports to a high level and have an in-depth knowledge of the planning process, EIA and BREEAM. You will be competent managing a range of project work and leading a team of more junior team members. An ecological specialism along with a protected species licence (e.g. bat, GCN, dormouse) is also desirable.


Your main duty will be to deliver projects and to support the development and work of the ecology team within the business. You will work closely with the directors and your key responsibilities will include:

* Preparing tenders and managing budgets
* Client and team management
* Overseeing and providing support to in-house ecologists on a range projects
* Reviewing ecological projects at all stages, providing technical guidance where necessary
* Planning and assisting field surveys, public enquiries and site meetings
* Designing and implementing ecological assessments
