An opportunity exists at Cefas for a Web GIS Expert in the Geographic Information Analysis (GIA) Team. The team consists of analysts and scientists working on diverse projects including spatial analysis, fisheries and their impact, modelling, Big Data, web applications and data management.

You will be working on SQL database development, web-application development and deployment, and data management. You will work closely with the ArcGIS Enterprise and R Studio Connects servers and support the utilisation of the servers across a diverse range of projects, such as fisheries, benthic ecosystems, marine spatial planning, spatial-temporal modelling.

You will drive the development of best practice methods for web map applications and data analysis tools across a range of scientific projects, including database management, app development, user testing and app publication. You will need to work closely and strategically with colleagues from across the organisation, including IT, data managers, specialist scientists as well as customers externally.

The work will involve integrating workflows between platforms, including R Studio Connects, Arcgis Enterprise, PostGIS. Development of web apps will include R Shiny apps and ESRI story maps.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

It is essential that you have substantial experience of developing web maps, such as Story maps, dashboards, and interactive tools. Direct experience of ArcGIS online, and/or RShiny apps.

Significant experience of database development and sound understanding of servers.

Experience with GitHub or equivalent code versioning system, and development of wiki pages would be useful.

You must be able to work effectively both as a team member and with minimal supervision within a professional working environment. The ability to plan and prioritise work to meet deadlines, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate with technical experts in other fields, are key to this position.

You must also demonstrate:

  • Understanding of spatial data workflows (Extract-Transform-Load pipeline)
  • A successful record of designing, conducting and visualising analysis of spatial data
  • Experience of presenting clearly to different audiences (internal, external, international)
  • Experience of leading projects as principal investigator or project manager

You should have a degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science or an equivalent subject, a postgraduate degree, however, equivalent demonstrable experience will also be considered.

Cefas welcomes flexible working and is open to a hybrid approach of working from home and in the office. You will be required to carry out all duties from a UK location and cannot do so from an overseas location at any time unless travelling for business purposes.
