Computer Research Specialist

The College of Earth, Ocean and Environment is establishing a satellite (X-band and geostationary L-band) receiving station with the goal of making satellite data available to researchers and environmental managers in real-time. A major component of such a system is the development of procedures for archiving and dissemination of the data via web-based Geographic Information Systems routines.
Under the general supervision of the Deputy Dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, this position will develop and maintain a database to store, process and distribute CEOE's real-time satellite observations.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for basic maintenance of the satellite receiving stations. Troubleshoots and coordinates with satellite manufacturer as necessary to resolve any satellite station performance issues. Monitors data ingest, processing and storage on a daily basis. Manages problems related to data ingest difficulties. Uses "Terra Scan" image analysis software for production of presentation quality images from raw remotely sensed imagery. Develop and maintain a database (Oracle, MySQL, etc.) for storage, imaging and distribution of satellite data. Evaluate and recommend testing and evaluation of new procedures, software, and hardware. Coordinate database changes. Identify and resolve production and/or application development problems related to software or utilities. Create database-driven, dynamic websites. Develop routines for making satellite imagery available in Geographic Information Systems format to various end-users across Delaware. Monitors and maintains database security and database software, in cooperation with data security administrators. Maintains availability and integrity of databases through multiple access schemes; facilitates sharing of common data by overseeing proper key and index management and data dictionary maintenance. Creates, procures and maintains various database related documents such as manuals and programmers handbooks. Perform miscellaneous research-related and operational duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or relevant earth science degree and three years job related experience. Two years experience with Unix/Linux systems, database systems (preferably Microsoft SQL Server) and web development software (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) on Microsoft platforms (preferably using Microsoft.NET). Experience in another platform-neutral database system (such as MySQL) or web programming platform (such as PHP) could also be considered. Experience with environmental data/image analysis using ENVI, Matlab, IDL, R, etc. preferred. Experience with Web Mapping Services (WMS) or Thematic Realtime Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS) preferred. Experience with NetCDF or HDF scientific data formats preferred. Proficient computer skills. Ability to analyze and solve problems. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to prioritize, plan and organize work.
