VN17/21 Optical Calibration Expert

Are you experienced in the calibration of optical satellite instruments and product retrievals?

We are looking for an expert to develop tools and techniques to perform and measure the calibration and validation of our optical instruments, specifically those on board the future Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) and EUMETSAT Polar System- Second Generation (EPS-SG) satellites.

This is an opportunity to develop and implement calibration concepts for the optical imagers planned for the future geostationary and polar orbiting Earth Observation (EO) missions. You must be adept at using and monitoring calibration techniques along with the algorithms recommended by the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS).

You need to have an advanced university degree or equivalent in physics, remote sensing, optical instrument engineering, or a related subject. You should be a team player and be motivated to apply your expertise in an operational environment. You will also need to demonstrate:

  • A proven experience in the area of calibration of optical satellite instruments, product retrievals, and/or data processing;
  • An in-depth understanding of remote sensing instrumentation;
  • A solid understanding of the concepts of calibration and traceability;
  • A good working knowledge of statistical techniques;
  • A good knowledge of radiative transfer in the solar and/or infrared spectral ranges;
  • Experience in polarisation aspects of visible/near-infrared remote sensing is advantageous;
  • Proven experience in the use of data analysis tools, such as MATLAB/IDL and high-level programming, such as C/C++ in a Linux/Unix environment;
  • Good communication, inter-personal skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team.

In addition to attractive salary and benefits, we offer an outstanding working environment in Darmstadt, 'the City of Science'. We provide re-location support and child-care advice - as well as a very warm welcome.

All applicants must be a EUMETSAT member state national with a good working knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written. You also require some knowledge of French.

EUMETSAT is committed to providing an equal opportunities work environment for men and women.

Closing date is 5th July 2017 with interviews provisionally booked for w/c 7th August 2017.
