Background Information

Inventory, Forecasting and Operational Support (IFOS) is part of the Corporate and Forestry Support Division (CFS). CFS provides core GB and international support and expertise across a range of specialism's and supports the Director General and Secretary to the Forestry Commissioners. IFOS delivers a collaborative service in which the three countries and specialists, in conjunction with Information Services (IS) and Forest Research (FR) as appropriate, can jointly review and improve the systems, procedures & practises necessary to translate policy into practice.

Within IFOS, Operational Support provides a service to review, support and improve a defined range of systems, procedures and practises used by FC estate managers across GB. Operational Support currently has responsibility for the systems and processes used to manage the National Forest Estate (NFE) in England, Scotland & Wales. This is managed primarily via the corporate Forester GIS application. Forester is a collection of custom software modules that are delivered on top of the ESRI ArcGIS desktop and server side software. IFOS have in-house teams delivering in areas of Forester GIS development, service delivery, maintenance, support, testing and project management.

Operational Support also project manages and delivers Operational Guidance Booklets (OGB's) and other IT systems such as the Chemical Database and the Deer Management System.

Forest Enterprise Scotland is charged with managing over 600k ha of woodland across Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government. It employs around 600 GIS users in various locations across Scotland, including two head offices, ten forest district offices and various smaller oustationed offices, often in remote locations.

Purpose of the Job

To manage and deliver the technical support of GIS to Forest Enterprise Scotland.

As GIS Manager you must have;

  • A good working knowledge and proven track record in GIS support or in IT support
  • Working knowledge of the ESRI ArcGIS Product Suite
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software, database design, structured query language and Oracle RDBMS, ArcGIS Server and Desktop
