Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), located at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,222/Mo. DUTIES: Support scientists' research in ecosystems and species/genetic population dynamics across temporal and spatial scales and will be responsible for the development and application of data structures and modeling algorithms for the analysis of complex bio-geographical systems. Design, develop and implement computational models for species invasions, involving ecosystems, climate, geography and human activity. Ensure that data collected by other team members can be integrated and used in computer models to draw valid scientific conclusions. Participate in the analysis of data for model development and prediction. Work with collaborating partners (UH System, governmental, NGO and private) to coordinate interoperability with legacy and future applications. Participate in outreach and scientific dissemination activities such as preparation and presentation of papers, talks and posters. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: PhD from an accredited college or university in a field directly related to the duties listed above. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in writing and running computer simulations of complex ecological systems with demonstrated results in significant scientific contributions. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Solid knowledge of a diverse set of relevant algorithms and software such as evolutionary computing, agent-based models, complex networks and nonlinear data analysis. Good general knowledge of ecological sciences. Strong programming ability, as well as flexibility to understand and adapt off-the-shelf software. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience as part of an interdisciplinary team. Proficiency with large databases, high-performance computing and advanced visualization techniques. Track record in the supervision of undergraduate researchers.
