Earth Observation Scientist (Fixed Term)

HR Wallingford provides world-leading independent analysis, advice and support in engineering and environmental hydraulics and the management of water and the water environment.

We currently have an exciting 12 month fixed term opportunity (with the potential to extend) for an enthusiastic, creative, and highly motivated applicant holding a master's degree or post-doctoral experience in the interpretation and analysis of Satellite Earth Observations.

The successful applicant will join our Water Group which has an established reputation of delivering high quality consultancy and research (both applied and academic) across water management disciplines in the UK and internationally.

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and technically driven candidate to work at the heart of a high profile project funded by the UK Space Agency aimed at developing a dengue fever early warning system for Vietnam with HR Wallingford. We are eagerly seeking an individual to creatively support delivery of ongoing projects with the following skills:

  • Experience in image quality assessment of data from various satellite imagery missions.
  • Ability to investigate issues and anomalies in data quality and with an excellent knowledge of EO data and image processing levels and techniques.
  • Experience of software such as ERDAS, IDRISI, ENVI, ESRI, NEST and Sentinel-1 toolbox including relevant programming experience (Python, IDL).
  • Excellent skills in Optical and SAR image analysis and data visualisation.
  • Awareness of evolving and innovative EO technologies and techniques.


  • Experience in creating tools for remote sensing data manipulation.
  • Good understanding of instrument calibration principles (e.g. geometric, radiometric, spectral, etc.).
  • Experience of big data and/or machine learning techniques.
  • Ability to generate ideas and concepts for new and innovative EO-enabled products, solutions and services.

  • A co-operative and helpful attitude toward colleagues and clients.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision as part of/or running small teams.
  • Self-motivated and able to research and work on own initiative.
  • Ability to take responsibility for assigned projects and capable of handling multiple tasks.
