Temporary position: GIS Scientist



Location: Ashtead, Surrey
Start date: immediate

A temporary position has become available for an excellent candidate to provide GIS and Remote Sensing support to the Remote Sensing Project Manager at ImageCat Ltd, an industry-leading R&D company, specialising in the application of advanced technologies including remote sensing and GIS for disaster mitigation, response and recovery.

The successful applicant will provide support for the Project Manager for several established projects that incorporate the use of optical remotely sensed imagery and GIS for applications in the field of natural disaster response and recovery. The post will be based at ImageCat's UK office in Ashtead, Surrey.

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic graduate with fundamental GIS and remote sensing experience. Daily duties will include and are not limited to, image preparation and processing (e.g. rectification, resampling), digitisation, spatial data management, and GIS and image analysis. Applicants must be enthusiastic and have excellent communication skills as they will be an integral part of a small and dynamic team.

The successful candidate must have experience in the following essential areas:

  • Experience in GIS analysis using ArcGIS software suite (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox)
  • Remote sensing image analysis using proprietary software (ENVI, ERDAS Imagine)
  • Experience in spatial data management
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access)

The following attributes are desirable, but non-essential:

  • Previous programming or GIS customisation experience, including web-GIS
  • Previous use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) or other advanced technologies beyond optical imagery
  • Field work experience using GPS technology
  • Experience using Manifold GIS software

The position is on a temporary basis and is aimed at a newly graduated student from disciplines such as geography, environmental science, computer science or engineering. It is an excellent opportunity to further the technical skill set gained at undergraduate level, whilst immersed in a progressive and exciting field. For the right candidate, the post may have potential future career progression within the company, or may lead to further academic advancement if so desired.

The expected start date of the post is immediate and pay is commensurate with experience.
