Postdoctoral Researcher - Thermal Remote Sensing of Land Surface Temperature and Energy Fluxes
The postholder will join the highly dynamic "Earth Observation and Wildfire" research group based at King's College London, led by Prof. Martin Wooster. They will work within the part of this interdisciplinary team developing and evaluating methods to characterise vegetation and environmental status, mainly using thermal infrared (TIR) methods. This post will focus mainly on use of airborne sensing and on estimating and validating land surface temperature (LST) and evapotranspiration (ET) over vegetated environments, but there will also be potential to work on urban areas. UAV based applications will be a focus, but there is also the opportunity to exploit data from manned aircraft platforms - including the highly advanced NASA JPL HyTES airborne hyperspectral TIR imager operated in Europe in 2019 and which will be again in 2020 via a King's-ESA-NASA collaboration. The UAV component of the work forms part of a UK-China co-operative project focused ultimately on delivering information relevant to crop monitoring and crop pest and disease forecasting. A parallel component of this project aims to deliver downscaled LST (and possibly ET) information from EO satellites for the same purpose, and there is the opportunity for the postholder to also be involved in this aspect. Strong experience in thermal remote sensing, in using data from field, airborne and/or satellite sensors, and good computing abilities are essential. Whilst the post is based at King's Bush House Campus at the heart of Central London, fieldwork opportunities will occur in 2020/2021 in the UK with our commercial UAV partner, in Spain and possibly elsewhere in Europe with NASA-JPL and the European Space Agency and others, and in China with a host of UK and local partners.
