The following professorship has to be filled at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences of University of Leipzig starting on April 1st,2019:

W3 Professorship “Remote Sensing of the Water Cycle in the Earth System”

The professorship has to be filled as a joint appointment with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).

The successful candidate is distinguished by an outstanding expertise in satellite-based remote sensing (passive and active) to monitor the Earth's water cycle and to understand – through direct or indirect measurements – the variability of hydrological processes over multiple space and time scales. It is a major strength of the applicant to develop novel approaches for extracting information and products (e.g. soil moisture time series, evaporation fluxes, water levels, precipitation rates, water quality attributes) from remote sensing data – one research focus could therefore be in the field of microwave remote sensing – and thus to foster hydrological applications as spatially distributed and process-related simulation models.

A close collaboration with the Institutes at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences is expected as well as a substantial contribution to the Remote Sensing Centre for Earth System Research, a novel joint research initiative of Leipzig University and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).

The successful candidate will head the new Department for Remote Sensing at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and will actively participate in the study programmes at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at Leipzig University. The position will be located at the UFZ in Leipzig.

We offer state-of-the-art infrastructure (e.g. High Performance Computing, Terrestrial Environmental Observatories – TERENO) and outstanding scientific opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research programmes.
