The following professorship has to be filled at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences of University of Leipzig starting on April 1st,2019:

W3 Professorship “Modelling approaches in remote sensing”

The future holder of this professorship should be an internationally renowned scientist with a strong expertise in the field of radiative transfer modelling, aiming at the theoretical description and modelling of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with the components of the Earth system, especially the terrestrial surface (e.g. plant canopies and the boundary layers). Perspectively, research should focus on the physically-based simulation of the radiative transfer processes covering both the optical and microwave domain, and on the integration of newly developed modelling codes in the time series analysis of active and passive remote sensing data.

This is expected to provide an innovative framework for a coupling with process-related environmental modelling approaches and thus to effect a better model based understanding of the complex dynamics of Earth's environmental systems. The professorship will contribute substantially to the scheduled Remote Sensing Centre for Earth System Research, a novel joint research initiative of Leipzig University and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ).
Besides this, the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences offers various disciplines in geosciences, geography, and physics.

Applicants are thus expected to formulate a vision for the contribution of their research in this scientific setting with outstanding scientific opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research programmes.

The successful candidate will actively participate in the study programmes at the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at Leipzig University and in the academic self-governance.

Further information about the scheduled Remote Sensing Centre for Earth System Research is given on and

Rights and obligations of the jobholder are within the Saxonian university law (Sächsisches Hochschulfreiheitsgesetz, SächsHSFG) and the Saxonian public service task regulation (Sächsische Dienstaufgabenverordnung, DAVOHS). Applicants must meet the requirements of § 58 SächsHSFG.

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the University of Leipzig emphasizes the equality of women and men.
Handicapped applicants are encouraged to apply and given preference if equally qualified.
