Assistant Professor - SET at NJIT


The Department of Engineering Technology of the Newark College of Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Surveying Engineering Technology (SET). By the time of appointment, successful candidates must have earned a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree in geomatics, geodetic science, geospatial science/technology, and/or a related field of civil/environmental/aerospace/mechanical engineering with some working knowledge and expertise in satellite geodesy, GPS, LiDAR, hyper-spectral imaging, and signal processing. Applicable industrial experience in Unmanned Autonomous Vehicle (UAV) geospatial mapping, and prior teaching experience are highly desirable. Areas of teaching emphasis may include, but are not limited to UAV system integration, data acquisition, data fusion and management. Moreover, applicants who also have an interest in Engineering Education and Engineering Education research will have a preference.

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate SET courses, demonstrate potential to establish strong industrial collaborations, and participate in the development of a remote sensing mapping and geospatial analytics program at NJIT. S/he is also expected to engage in data collection and analysis focused on course and lab development, delivery and pedagogy, and assist in advancing Engineering Education research at NJIT. In addition, candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Based on qualifications, the Department may seek a joint appointment for the Candidate with the NJIT Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, which would provide him/her with opportunities to engage in academic research with graduate research assistants.

In addition to Engineering Education, areas of research and academic interest of particular relevance include:

  • Unmanned Autonomous systems, with applications to multispectral remote sensing imagery
  • Geographic Information Science (GISc) and Cartographic Visualization
  • Geospatial Mapping Focused CAD
  • Geospatial Analytics, in particular analysis of big geospatial data, trajectories, movement data or 3D point clouds
  • Computational imaging and multi-modality fusion

At over 800 students, the Department of Engineering Technology has the largest undergraduate enrollment within the Newark College of Engineering, and is well known for providing a balance of theory and hands-on education. The NJIT campus is located in Newark, which is the largest city in New Jersey, and only 12 miles from New York City. The state of New Jersey is home to a large number of industries, including several Fortune 100 and 500 companies in the Medical Device and Pharmaceutical industries.
