Research Assistant/Associate - Software Development and Operations

Young and research-intensive, Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) is ranked 12th globally. It is also placed 1st amongst the world's best young universities. The Earth Observatory in Singapore (EOS) at NTU Singapore is a national science Research Center of Excellence. Its mission is to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, toward safer and more sustainable societies.

We invite applicants for a Research Assistant/ Associate to help with help with software development of new features and mission control of a near-real-time, partially automated Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) processing and response system to facilitate geodetic research, monitoring of natural hazards and disaster response. Specific targets may include flooding, land subsidence, volcano monitoring, tectonic deformation and earthquake studies across Southeast Asia. The job scope will include (a) development of additional features in our web-based interface according to user requirements, (b) coordination with scientists at the Earth Observatory of Singapore to integrate post-processing algorithms for SAR data into disaster response system, (c) troubleshoot issues raised and develop fixes to ensure our system is always ready for response.

The ideal candidate will possess strong programming skills in Python is highly skilled with Linux OS. They will have experience working with cloud-computing platforms (AWS) and distributed systems. They should also have the sense of urgency in responding to natural and the enthusiasm to collaborate with a varied group that will include Earth scientists, social scientists, technical staff, policy makers, NGO's, and disaster-response organizations.

REQUIREMENTS:

A strong, successful candidate should have:

  • At the Research Associate level, a Masters Degree. At the Research Assistant level, a Bachelors Degree, Diploma in Computer Science / Software Engineering or equivalent
  • Strong experience with Python and working with LinuxOS
  • Confident in working with cloud-based distributed systems (AWS)
  • Knowledge with web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and familiarity with tools like Docker, Terraform, Puppet, Jenkins, RabbitMQ, Celery, and Elasticsearch is a plus
  • Willingness to learn scientific processing software and tools
  • Strong program management skills (project workflow planning, trouble shooting, etc.)
  • Strong English and communication skills, both written and oral.
