Background:

RapidEye AG is a provider of geospatial management information and solutions, customized to the needs of clients in the Agriculture, Forestry, Power & Communication, Environmental and Governmental markets. As its main data source, RapidEye operates a constellation of five identical high-resolution earth observation satellites capable of imaging any point on earth every day. Combining the knowledge and skills of our professional staff with the unique features of our satellite constellation and ground processing facility, we are the only provider who can supply the most up-to-date, customized information to clients around the world.

RapidEye has an immediate opening for a Calibration and Quality Assurance Specialist to join the Calibration and Validation Team. The successful candidate will participate in ongoing engineering and operational activities related to payload radiometric and geometric on-orbit performance assessment and system image quality assurance. This is a unique opportunity to be directly involved in the operation of a complex, satellite-based remote sensing system. The expertise of the team in combination with a thorough understanding of the system will be used to improve and optimize current operation procedures, resolve issues and develop future enhancements.

The Challenge:

The successful candidate will be responsible for completing assignments to support the:

  • processes related to radiometric and geometric performance assessment of RapidEye imaging payloads.
  • application of vicarious calibration processes and procedures, data processing and operations to maintain system calibration parameters.
  • organization and co-ordination of future cross-calibration activities with teams from other satellite imaging system providers.
  • enhancement of image product assurance procedures.

Education

  • A university degree or higher (e.g MS, PhD) in a related field such as remote sensing, physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering, or computer science is required. A demonstrated ability to perform the essential position functions is required.

Requirements and Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years experience in the calibration of electro-optic or thermal imaging payloads with a sound knowledge of remote sensing systems engineering and imaging payload technologyExperience with the development and application of vicarious calibration campaign objectives and processes (target characterization, image acquisition, data processing, atmospheric modeling, etc.)
  • Understanding of image quality metrics and familiarity with image product assurance processes.
  • Strong software engineering skills with demonstrated experience in C++ programming and use of commercial engineering analysis tools ( e.g MatLab, IDL)
  • Knowledge of remote sensing software packages (e.g. PCI Geomatica, ENVI)
  • Familiarity with the Linux operating system is an asset
  • Possess an entrepreneurial thinking style and be open to new ideas. Be interdisciplinary minded with a willingness to work in cross-functional teams that include engineering, operations, production, and quality assurance personnel to achieve results.
  • Function as team player with effective oral and written communication skills while demonstrating initiative and energy for the position and overall success of the company.
  • Self-starter, works on own initiative but communicates her/his plans, ideas and concepts to her/his supervisor.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; German a plus, other languages welcome.

Desired Specific Experience:

  • Demonstrated project engineering leadership and management skills
  • Experience within or knowledge of satellite ground segment operations and product development environments
