Post-doctoral fellowship
GeoSpatial/GIS analysis of natural hazards

A post-doctoral scientist position is available in Geospatial/GIS analysis of natural hazards at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). An active researcher is sought to join a team working with large geospatial databases in order to assess flood risk and other natural hazards and hazard vulnerability. Funding is from a new FEMA grant to quantify hazards and risk and help prepare Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plans for 17 Illinois counties. The successful candidate will have advanced GIS skills and experience, as outlined below, and may have additional skills and research interests complimentary to on-going research in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, hydraulic modeling, and visualization of large river-based datasets.

The successful applicant must have the following:

  • Degree in geoscience, hydrology, or geospatial-science field
  • PhD required for position as post-doctoral fellow
  • Outstanding MS applicants with 3+ years of GIS experience will be considered if no suitable PhD candidate is identified
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with ArcGIS and related ESRI products
  • Experience developing innovative methods to visualize large and complex geospatial datasets
  • Strong potential for academic growth demonstrated by: journal publications, papers presented at scientific meetings, funding proposals written, and/or technical reports completed.
Other desired areas of expertise and potential research interests include:
  • 1D, 2D hydraulic modeling (HEC-RAS, FLDWAV, MIKE, RMS, RMA, etc.)
  • GIS-based hydrologic and hydraulic analysis using ArcHydro
  • Multivariate statistical analysis using SAS and/or SPSS
  • Experience with government GIS
The surficial processes research group at SIUC has several large on-going projects in the areas of river dynamics, flooding, and geospatial analysis of hazards. The group has produced a massive database documenting detailed changes on >4000 km of the Mississippi-Missouri river system through the past 100-200 years, and this database is the focus of continuing work on data visualization, hydraulic modeling, and geomorphic research. Other funded projects include a regional assessment of levee expansion, hydraulic effects, and failure susceptibility as well as projects on several European rivers.

SIUC (http://www.siuc.edu) is a large research-oriented university located in the central USA. The university has >20,000 students, ~4000 at the graduate level. The successful candidate will be hosted jointly by the Geology Department (http://www.science.siu.edu/geology) and/or by the inter-disciplinary Environmental Resources and Policy Program (http://www.siu.edu/~er&p). Southern Illinois University occupies a forested campus in Carbondale, a town of 50,000 in the southern part of Illinois. The cities of St. Louis, Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, Indianapolis, and Louisville are located within a few hours drive.

A complete application package - consisting of Curriculum Vitae (CV), a 1-page letter outlining research experience, university records, and at least 3 letters of recommendation - should be submitted by or before Dec. 15, 2007 to Prof. N. Pinter, Geology Department, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale IL 62901-4324, USA. No email or other electronic submissions will be considered.
