Lecturer/Junior Lecturer in Geographical Information Technology (2 posts)

These two permanent positions - in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Digital Photogrammetry - will be filled to realise an exciting new initiative to position Stellenbosch University as the market leader in GIT research application and teaching in South Africa and Africa.

The positions require to be filled by individuals with the necessary academic profile and vision to aid in the planning of Geographical Information Technology (GIT) teaching and its application in spatial research. One position will be filled by a person with skills specifically in Remote Sensing and its application to practical research problems.

Duties:

  • Academic leadership in GIT
  • academic programme development and regeneration
  • undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in GIT and related Geography modules postgraduate supervision in the application of GIT in human or environmental geographical research
  • running a productive research programme in GIT application in environmental studies, urban geography, tourism and earth science disciplines
  • publication of research results in accredited journals o securing research funding
  • participation in departmental activities and research projects
  • academic interaction with the community.

Requirements:

  • Preferably a doctorate in Geography, GIT or a related discipline
  • a growing academic profile in the GIT and/or Geography environment
  • competence as lecturer and supervisor or as GIT specialist in industry
  • a record of research and scientific publication in GIT application
  • excellent communication and language skills in English.

Recommendations: Professional qualifications in GIT and/or experience in GIT application in appropriate disciplines o ability to teach in Afrikaans as well as in English.

Commencement of duties: 1 July 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter
