Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The Department Surface Waters Research and Management (SURF) has an open position for a
PhD student in Remote Sensing of Surface Water Quality
The position will integrate in situ measurements, novel remote sensing data, and process models to advance assessments of surface water quality across spatio-temporal scales. Possible research questions that can be addressed relate to i) the advancement of theoretical understanding of the radiative transfer in surface waters, ii) the development of new methods for improved estimates of surface water quality from spectroscopic measurements, or iii) the combination of remote sensing with applications requiring exact and comprehensive information of surface water quality.
The successful applicant will be based at Eawag in Dübendorf and will be supported through collaborations with research groups within the SURF department and the nearby University of Zürich and will benefit from a highly interdisciplinary research environment in the larger Zurich area.
We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent person with passion for science and willing to work in an interdisciplinary team. Upon start, applicant must have a completed master’s degree in remote sensing, environmental science, physics, engineering, or any related field. Applicants must be able to pursue data-oriented computational research as well as experimental approaches and field work. A good standard of written and spoken English is required. The position starts as of 1 February 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and is limited to three years.
Eawag offers a unique research and working environment and is committed to promoting equal opportunities for women and men and to support the compatibility of family and work. Applications from women are especially welcome. For more information about Eawag and our work conditions please consult www.eawag.ch and http://www.eawag.ch/en/aboutus/working/employment/.
Applications must be submitted by 21 December 2017 and should include an application letter describing your research interests and their relevance for this position, a CV, and names and contact information of two references.
