We are seeking to recruit a Research Scientist in rock mechanics located at our Schlumberger Dhahran Carbonate Research Center (“SDCR”) facility in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. SDCR carries out fundamental and applied research directed towards new products and services for improving the efficiency of hydrocarbon production and recovery in a cost-effective, safe environmentally friendly manner.

Applicants should have a strong background in fracture mechanics of solids, preferably in rocks. They must have extensive skills in finite element and finite difference modeling and be proficient users of commercial modeling tools such as FLAC3D, ABAQUS and PFC3D, with the ability to create numerical models for complex problems. Experience in extended finite element (XFEM) and discrete element (DEM) methods is a definite plus. Applicants should have the ability to perform modeling tasks in coupling fluid dynamics in porous media with rock mechanical behaviour to investigate hydraulic fracturing processes of rock. An understanding of experimental physics and instruments used to make rock mechanics measurements would also be an advantage. The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in Rock Mechanics, Geological Engineering or a related field. We aim for the successful candidate to start in the first half of 2010.
