Opening for a PhD study in Seismology

The Research School of Earth Dynamics at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen has an opening for a PhD study in seismology.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong background in physics or geophysics with interest in innovative interpretation of seismic data, including testing of new methods. Experience with Receiver Functions will be an advantage.

The study programme will focus on innovative investigations of the influence of fine-scale structure in the Earth's mantle on seismological data. We anticipate significant results for Receiver Functions, in particular for S-waves. The studies will be based on calculation of theoretical seismograms and imaging using available high quality broadband seismological data. The PhD fellow will have access to large installations of high-performance computers and state of the art software for the data processing. The successful candidate will have opportunities for participation in collaborative seismological programmes, including new field acquisition of seismological data.

The project will be carried out in association with a joint research programme between University of Copenhagen and Rice University, Houston. The candidate will carry out his research in both groups. Supervisors will be Professors Hans Thybo (University of Copenhagen) and Alan Levander (Rice University, Houston).

Candidates should hold a MSc degree in physics or geophysics.
