PhD scholarship in low frequency Ocean Seismoacoustics
The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) invites applicants for a PhD scholarship in low frequency Ocean Seismoacoustics. The position is funded by DIAS and the successful candidate will be expected to undertake four years of PhD research based at the Geophysics Section of the Institute, based in Dublin city.
Wind driven ocean gravity waves cause continuous background seismic vibrations called microseisms. While there is a strong theoretical understanding of the cause of microseisms in terms of ocean wave-wave interactions, the recorded seismic wavefield does not always match theoretical predictions. This is thought to be largely due to the distorting effects of structural heterogeneity in the source region and on the path between the microseism source and the recording instrument. In this work we will investigate to what extent microseism data hold retrievable and separable information about both ocean wave state and microseism source regions. The work will draw on a large database of near-ocean terrestrial seismic network data, microseism-tuned seismic array data, and infrasound data from Ireland. Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) & deep water marine acoustic data from the N.E. Atlantic will also be available to the project. The work will be supported by forward numerical simulation methodologies and machine learning applications.
