GNS Science is New Zealand's primary Institute for research on understanding earthquake hazards and reducing earthquake risks and is recognised internationally in these areas.

We are seeking a talented and motivated seismologist for a permanent, fulltime position in our Avalon, Lower Hutt office. The scientist will contribute to high-priority work in the Seismology - Source to Surface Team including the Rapid Characterisation of Earthquakes and Tsunamis programme and our National Science Challenge Earthquake & Tsunami Theme. They will provide ground motion modelling and computational seismology capability, from underpinning science to application for the benefit of New Zealand.

Specific topics will be dependent on the successful candidate and could include:

  • developing empirical and physics-based ground motion simulation frameworks to model large numbers of rupture scenarios, including complex rupture
  • physics-based ground motion modelling of regional/local ground motion effects due to sedimentary basins and/or topography
  • implementation of real-time and/or rapid earthquake analysis tools, from science to practice

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • A strong foundation in ground motion modelling and modern scientific programming
  • Experience in high-performance computing and/or application of computational seismology solutions to large complex problems
  • A PhD and/or postdoctoral experience in seismology with a degree in seismology, engineering or geophysics. All experience levels will be considered.
  • Experience and enjoyment working in a research environment as part of a team.
  • Ability to develop and strengthen our international collaboration
  • Strong communication and writing skills

New Zealand's borders are currently closed to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. International candidates will still be considered however, they might be required to work remotely as a contractor from overseas until New Zealand's borders reopen.
