Universität Hamburg is dedicated to sustainability, equal opportunity, and family-friendly policies. We also prize cultural diversity, communication, and interaction among people from different backgrounds and with different lifestyles.

As a University for sustainability, we put human resources development and especially the development and advancement of our young researchers at the fore of our strategic endeavors. By strengthening the tenure-track professorship, Universität Hamburg has introduced a new career opportunity for young researchers.

Due to the success of the tenure-track program run by the Ministry for Education and Research and to strengthen the University’s key research area “Climate, Earth, and Environment” Universität Hamburg invites applications for the following tenure-track professorship:

The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

Tenure-track Professorship (W1 Tenure-track leading to
a W2) for Geophysical Subsurface Imaging

commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. JP 276

The professorship is located in the Department of Earth Science.

The successful candidate is expected to carry out research in the field of geophysical subsurface imaging, preferably with an emphasis on seismic methods. The candidate is expected to teach parts of the applied geophysics curriculum at undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc, PhD) levels. Use of the institute’s applied geophysics equipment and the development of new inversion methods that integrate different geophysical measurements in subsurface imaging are desirable. The integration of this expertise into climate research (e.g., permafrost monitoring, CCS, processes in glaciers during melting) is especially desirable.

The successful candidate is further expected to cooperate with other national and international institutions with regard to research and teaching and to initiate externally funded research programs. Finally, the successful candidate should have academic leadership skills and actively participate in academic self-governance. Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 18 HmbHG.

Further criteria:

Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well as a successful track record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

The post holder is expected to teach bachelor’s students. Classes in bachelor’s programs are normally held in German.

As part of their independent academic work, junior professors are also expected to pursue subject ties to the organizational area to ensure synergies in research and teaching.

A tenure-track evaluation will be conducted during the second phase of the junior professorship in order to determine whether requirements for appointment to a W2 professorship have been met. Section 15 HmbHG applies. If the evaluation is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured W2 professorship. The regulations prohibiting internal appointments (Hausberufungsverbot) also apply to this junior professorship.

In accordance with Section 14 subsection 3 sentence 3 HmbHG, Universität Hamburg seeks to increase the proportion of women in teaching and research and encourages female academics to apply.

Qualified disabled candidates or applicants with equivalent status receive preference in the application process.
