Job Description

The Offshore Fault Evaluation Group, Research and Development (R&D) Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (CEAT) , JAMSTEC is soliciting applications for a position as a Project Engineer. The successful applicant will work on a project entitled "Comprehensive Evaluation of Offshore Fault Information Project" and sub-projects entitled "Collection of Offshore Seismic Data and Construction of Database" (FY2013-FY2019, Co-investigator Shoshiro Shimizu) and "Unified Data Processing for Collected Data and Interpretation of Faults"(FY2013-FY2019, Co-Investigator Narumi Takahashi) .

The goal of the project is to interpret the distribution of faults in areas surrounding Japan using collected geophysical and geological data along with some reflection seismic data that will be re-processed as necessary. Additionally, velocity structures obtained by an ocean bottom seismometer (in addition to the velocity data acquired by seismic data processing) are applied to determine the fault distribution in depth domain.

Project Tasks

As one of the team members of the funded research project, the successful applicant will carry out the following duties, including performing a comprehensive role or performing an assistant role to a comprehensive role for the project;

  • Interpret fault distributions using seismic reflection data with consideration of the following aspects:
  • relation between velocity structure and fault stretching at depth,
  • fault continuity including seafloor topography,
  • fault matching of successive seismic sections.
  • Carry out geological analyses with consideration of the following aspects:
  • correlation between well data and seismic reflection data,
  • interpretation of main seismic horizons, such as the acoustic basement and geological unconformities.
  • Provide guidance regarding the creation of conference materials, produce and organize conference materials, and deliver presentations and reports on progress of the project at conferences.
  • Examine and coordinate project plans.
  • Assist with presentation materials.
  • Perform other duties as designated by the department.

Job Type

Project Engineer: To contribute to the project, a Project Engineer is expected to manage, improve and advance the infrastructure. Establishment of technology based on a background of general technical knowledge such as information system, improvement of technical management functions is also inclusive.

There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.

Requirements

The successful applicant must have a bachelor's degree in a closely related field. Those who have equivalent ability with extensive experience are also acceptable.

  • Applicants should have an interest in research pertaining to disaster prevention and reduction.
  • Experience with reflection seismic data processing and seismic data interpretation is desirable.
  • Our research work is conducted using dedicated software on a workstation; therefore, experience with server maintenance in the Unix/Linux environment is required.
  • Fluent Japanese is required to coordinate data management among many research institutes in Japan.
  • Experience in a management position is desirable.
