Postdoctoral Research Associate in Seismology

Department of Earth Sciences
Grade 7: £33,309 - £40,927 per annum
Fixed term for 18 months
Vacancy ID: 158214

The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, seeks to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate in Seismology for a fixed term of 18 months. The successful candidate will join a larger research team working on the project "Mantle Circulation Constrained (MC2): A multidisciplinary 4D Earth framework for understanding mantle upwellings", led by Prof Huw Davies at Cardiff University, which is funded by a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Large Grant. The post holder will report to Dr Paula Koelemeijer (University of Oxford) and collaborate closely with project partner Christophe Zaroli (University of Strasbourg), as well as Prof Ana Ferreira at UCL, Dr James Panton at Cardiff University and other members of the MC2 team.

You will be responsible for managing your own academic research and administrative tasks, while also providing guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including PhD and 4th year undergraduate students. You will develop and analyse regional seismic tomography models of upwellings in the Earth's mantle, and compare these to predictions of global mantle circulation models. You will set up and perform tomographic inversions using the SOLA method developed by the project partner, and take a leading role in overcoming any methodological problems that arise.

You will hold, or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in Seismology or other relevant fields, together with relevant experience. You will have proven knowledge of inverse methods and experience of working with seismic data. You will also have a demonstrable aptitude in developing numerical code and experience in Unix programming environments. You must also have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write publications and present research results, and have a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

The deadline for applications is midday on Friday 24 June 2022. You will be required to upload a CV and a Supporting Statement as part of your application.

Please do not attach any manuscripts, papers, transcripts, mark sheets or certificates as these will not be considered as part of your application.
