The University of the West Indies (UWI) is a dynamic, international institution serving the countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean. Its faculties offer a wide range of undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes in Humanities and Education, Pure and Applied Sciences, Science and Agriculture, Engineering, Law, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.

The Department of Geography and Geology, located on the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, is the only University Department in the English-speaking Caribbean that offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in geography and geology. The Earthquake Unit is a public funded agency responsible for seismic monitoring and research in Jamaica and as such it operates the Jamaica Seismography Network (JSN), the Jamaica Strong Motion Network, 1 USGS/GSN station and a network of 30 GPS monuments.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Applicants must have a postgraduate degree in Seismology or Geophysics with emphasis in Seismology
  • Experience in teaching and supervising students at the tertiary level.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will report to the Head, Geography and Geology and is expected to perform the following duties:

  • Direct and manage operations at the Earthquake Unit;
  • Maintain earthquake databases, data exchange agreements and current research projects;
  • Respond in a timely manner to provide public information on felt earthquakes;
  • Conduct research on Jamaican seismicity and seismic hazard;
  • Supervise graduate students (as needed);
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as needed.

The post is available for two years initially commencing August 1, 2009.
