University of Abertay, Dundee
School of Contemporary Sciences

Post Doctoral Research Assistant in Modelling Heterogeneity of Soils

(1 year appointment)

£29,853 - £35,646 Pro Rata (Grade 7)

The School of Contemporary Sciences at the University of Abertay Dundee Scotland wishes to appoint a PDRA for 1 year to work on models for heterogeneity in soils. You will join the SIMBIOS centre, which hosts a leading multidisciplinary research team of physicists, experimental scientists, and mathematicians. The SIMBIOS centre develops novel ways to interrogate soil ecosystems, focusing on the emergence of ecosystem services from the microscopic spatial complexity of soils. SIMBIOS has first class computing and laboratory facilities including a micro-tomography suite with two X-ray machines dedicated to environmental research. In a time that soils are facing massive challenges related to the global carbon cycle, food production, pollution and erosion, this post offers a great opportunity for you to have impact in this important and exciting field.

You should be an experienced modeller with a track record of producing publications. The position will be for one year to conduct research to describe quantitatively the multiscale heterogeneity of soils, using multifractal measures, and assist with the development of methods to quantify the connectivity of soils at different scales, as well as contribute to the team effort related to the Lattice-Boltzmann modelling of soils.

Informal information about the position can be obtained from Professor John Palfreyman: 01382 308048, e-mail: j.palfreyman@abertay.ac.uk, or Professor Philippe Baveye, 01382 308488, e-mail: p.baveye@abertay.ac.uk.

Further details can also be accessed through our website at www.abertay.ac.uk or alternatively from Human Resources, University of Abertay, Bell Street Dundee, DD1 1HG (Telephone 01382 308030 - 24 hour voicemail service).

Completed application forms together with current curriculum vitae should be returned to Human Resources by e-mail to HR@abertay.ac.uk or by mail to the address above.

The closing date for applications is 21 September 2010.
