PhD Grant: Dynamics of soils and land surface during Neolithic Age in northern Central Europe

A two plus one year PhD fellowship is available at the Graduate School 'Human Development in Landscapes' which has been established as part of the DFG Excellence-Initiative at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany, for the following project:

Dynamics of soils and land surface during Neolithic Age in northern Central Europe

The project addresses the processes of soil formation, soil erosion, sedimentation and direct human impact, and thus the dynamics of the land surface during Neolithic Age in northern Central Europe. The impact of human activities and the effects of climate, extreme weather events and vegetation on the processes of soil development, erosion and sedimentation will be investigated at archaeological sites and in their surroundings. The Neolithic environment will be reconstructed in detail and the matter dynamics will be quantified. The development of the land surface during the Neolithic has to be simulated with digital terrain models.

The Graduate School 'Human Development in Landscapes' offers the opportunity for intensive, in-tegrated interdisciplinary cooperation. Strong collaboration with other PhD projects, especially those investigating the same archaeological sites, is expected. The graduate programme is jointly offered by the faculties of Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Medicine, Agriculture and Nutrition Sciences. Supervision will be provided at an interfaculty level. The willingness to work in an interdisciplinary research environment is a prerequisite. For further information you may visit http://www.uni-kiel.de/landscapes/ or contact Prof. Dr. Hans-Rudolf Bork.

A grant of 1200 Euro per month will be provided for two years with the option of an extension for an additional year. Eligible candidates must hold an outstanding university degree in Geography, Geology or Agricultural Sciences, with a background in geomorphology and pedology. Experience in palaeo-ecologcial work is desired.

Applications should include a cover letter outlining the motivation for applying and detailing the re-search interests, a CV, a short research project outline and a letter of support from a referee. Submission should be done before October 15th, 2009 to: Prof. Dr. Hans-Rudolf Bork, hrbork@ecology.uni-kiel.de.
