Research professorship (junior/senior) in Soil Science and Soil Fertility

Location: Leuven, Belgium
Application deadline: 20 September 2019

Job description

Within the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) at KU Leuven (Belgium), a call for a full-time academic research professorship ("BOF-ZAP") will has opened in the field of Soil Science and Soil Fertility, with a starting date foreseen in October 2020. Research professorships are aimed at attracting candidates who are internationally recognized researchers in their field (senior BOFZAP), or have demonstrated high research potential (junior BOFZAP). The search committee is inviting potential candidates to express their interest, in order to enable them to prepare a strong application file and discuss their specific research agenda with a current member of the Academic Staff at the KU Leuven.

The candidate is expected to work at the forefront of soil science, seeking to unravel the biological, geochemical and pedo-genetic processes that determine soil quality (in particular soil fertility) as a determinant of sustainable agricultural production - with attention for productivity in developing countries. The candidate will ensure high-quality education in soil science and, more generally, in environmental and agricultural sciences.

KU Leuven offers attractive start-up funding (100 k€) during the first 2 years of appointment, with an additional contribution from the Department, e.g. a scholarship equivalent for one PhD student to work with the candidate. The hosting group houses a range of analytical facilities relevant for the profile in Soil Science and Fertility (stable isotope instrumentation, ICP-MS and ICP-OES, growth chambers, radioactive tracer work, LC-MS/MS, state-of-the-art microbiological methods, ...).

The EES Department (https://ees.kuleuven.be/) offers an interdisciplinary environment with a common interest in the functioning of geo- and ecosystems at different spatial and temporal scales, including human-environment interactions and the sustainable management of natural resources. The position will be hosted by the Division of Soil and Water Management (https://ees.kuleuven.be/bwb/), which conducts research in diverse fields such as land surface remote sensing, groundwater and contaminant hydrology, long-term trends in tropical soil fertility and soil chemistry, aquatic biogeochemistry, stable isotope techniques, soil water management, crop modelling, and land modelling and data assimilation.
