The Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at South Dakota State University is seeking a 12-month, Research Manager of the Dakota Lakes Research Farm (DLRF) in Pierre, South Dakota. This position will carry the rank of Assistant Professor. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

The Manager provides the vision, leadership and oversight to ensure that the research farm meets the South Dakota Agriculture Experiment Station and SDSU Extension objectives of conducting locally relevant agricultural research and transferring that new knowledge to South Dakota users. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a nationally recognized research program that identifies new knowledge of cropping systems and soil management techniques that assist growers to build soil health and agroecosystem resiliency (40% research/60% managerial appointment).

The Manager further works in cooperation and close communication with the Board of Directors of the DLRF to ensure that the farm's scientific and outreach program responds to the needs and objectives of area stakeholders. A substantial part of the Manager's responsibility includes executing the vision and mission of the DLRF, the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES), and SDSU. Stationed at the DLRF, the Manager shall work in collaboration with SDSU Extension personnel to plan appropriate outreach activities that engage/showcase the unit's research.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Manager sets the tone and direction for the work of all DLRF employees and shall work with the Director of the SDSU Agricultural Experiment Station to ensure that conditions are appropriate to enable optimal service to scientists using the facilities and to public stakeholders. The Manager is the liaison between the DLRF, CAFES researchers, and SDSU Extension. The incumbent will develop science-based, region specific, information for agricultural producers, crop specialists, and natural resource managers that enables climate-smart decision-making that supports optimum crop yields, soil health, and environmental stewardship. Publication of scholarly work in peer-reviewed journals and graduate student mentoring is expected of the successful candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, Animal Science or related discipline is required and must be completed by the appointment date. The successful candidate must be able to interact and communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing). A valid driver's license is required.
