The British Geological Survey (BGS), founded in 1835, is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), and is the world's longest-established national geological survey and the UK's premier centre for earth science information and expertise. A vacancy has arisen for a Support Scientist- Experimental Fluid Processes Research at our Headquarters in Keyworth.
You will support laboratory-based research investigating fluid flow and associated hydromechanical coupling in low permeability systems in our Transport Properties Research Laboratory. As well as helping to set up and run experiments responsibilities will also include sample preparation, characterisation of test material, commissioning of new equipment, maintenance of laboratory equipment and recording and initial processing of experimental data in relation to research on the geological disposal of radioactive waste and underground storage of carbon dioxide. In addition you may contribute to written reports and publications for existing projects, present results at project and international meetings and support colleagues in the preparation of new grant applications and bids for commercial contracts.
You should be qualified in science or combined science subject(s) at 'A' or equivalent level and have GCSE level or equivalent in Maths and English. Ideally you will have an aptitude for experimental work with a practical, hands-on technical approach. You must be highly adaptable, and be able to work on a variety of related projects with different project teams.
A degree in a geosciences or relevant engineering discipline is desirable but not essential.
You should be competent in the use of MS office and similar software and have strong evidence of good time management, project and task completion and meeting of deadlines. In addition you should demonstrate a capability in dealing with staff at all levels and be able to communicate clearly (both written and orally). The post involves team working; therefore you should be able to work effectively with others and also be able to work unsupervised.
Depending on qualifications and experience, starting salary for the role will be £15,820 per annum to £23,390 per annum. Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
