Principal Groundwater Modeller



We are BHP Billiton, a leading global resources company. BHP Billiton Iron Ore is one of the world's leading iron ore producers with our principal iron ore operations based in the Pilbara region of northern Western Australia and our corporate offices based in Perth. The operation currently comprises a complex integrated system of seven inland mining operations, more than 1000 km of rail, stock years and two separate port facilities located in Port Hedland.

As the Principal Groundwater Modeller you will facilitate the planning, design and approvals processes for mines at existing and future BHP Billiton WA Iron Ore operations by planning, coordinating and leading modelling studies into groundwater management in mining.

Accountabilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Lead groundwater modelling activities for operating and greenfield sites to support dewatering and water supply planning, environmental assessments, water balance modelling and technical studies;
  • Ensure consistency of groundwater modelling approaches and outcomes across WAIO, including developing and embedding standards;
  • Scope and review externally completed models and reports. Import completed models;
  • Complete or direct occasional modelling projects as required;
  • Mentor BHPB hydrogeologists in numerical modelling;
  • Manage the BHPB modelling knowledge base;
  • Determine appropriate software and methods for WAIO applications;
  • Assess and introduce relevant technical advances; and
  • Contribute to directional planning as part of the Hydrology leadership team.

Skills and Experience

As the successful applicant you will be an enthusiastic and motivated self starter. You will have the proven ability to write high quality technical reports and have strong communication and engagement skills. Your experience will also include:

  • Bachelor degree in Geology, Geotech Engineering, Environmental Engineering or similar (MSc in Hydrogeology preferred);
  • Strong familiarity with leading practice modelling standards
  • Considerable experience in numerical groundwater modelling
  • Significant experience in modelling for mining application
  • Proficiency in GIS software

Location

You will be based in Perth, Western Australia, in the CBD's newest building - 'City Square'. You will have stunning river views from your modern open plan office, state of the art facilities including virtual whiteboards and video conferencing facilities, a giant outdoor terrace with barbecues and 550 bicycle racks. The building also houses a childcare centre and a fully equipped gym.
