To address the threat of future water scarcity, the Australian Government has embarked on an ambitious, multi-billion dollar national water reform agenda. As part of a package to accelerate the pace of reform, the Bureau of Meteorology has been given responsibility to transform Australia's water information. Backed by key stakeholders, AUD$450 million and legislative powers, this water information initiative will deliver national water resource accounts and assessments through the development and maintenance of a freely accessible, integrated, water information system - the Australian Water Resources Information System (AWRIS). To succeed we must build a world-class team of highly innovative and committed hydrologists to achieve a global benchmark in scale, integration, technical complexity and impact.
