Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position (RA), forming part of the Sêr Cymru project: "Living with the Perfect Beast; establishing MixoHUB, a centre of excellence for mixoplankton research in Wales" led by Dr Aditee Mitra.

The focus of this Sêr Cymru project is to build "MixoHUB", a dynamic cross-disciplinary research group of international excellence based in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences with close collaborations with the School of Engineering and the Water Research Institute. Through establishment of a unique and impactful research group, for combined empirical and in silico research on the new mixoplankton paradigm, this project will thus develop national and international capability at Cardiff University, in a globally important arena.

This RA position in Hydro-Environmental Modelling is an exciting opportunity to be involved in the building of the new MixoHUB at Cardiff University. Working with Dr Reza Ahmadian, at The School of Engineering, and Dr Aditee Mitra, at The School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, the role of the RA is to incorporate and implement systems dynamics food-web processes of protist plankton within hydro-environmental models. Data generated from the laboratory experiments within MixoHUB will help, together with other data, inform the simulations. The RA will receive training in representing the systems dynamics ecophysiology processes of protist plankton in hydro-environmental models.

The RA will work in close collaboration with other MixoHUB associated staff including another MixoHUB RA conducting laboratory-based experimental work on plankton ecophysiology. The MixoHUB RAs will also have opportunities to collaborate with other projects linked to the hub, such as EC-funded Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions ITN MixITiN ( and EU funded EERES4WATER ( ).

In addition to the above duties, the RA will be expected to produce work of publishable quality for appropriate high quality peer reviewed journals, present papers at national and international conferences, develop outreach opportunities related to the MixoHUB vision, and contribute to the development of collaborative research grants.

The successful applicant will hold a Ph.D. in a relevant subject, including Engineering, Earth and Computer Sciences, with expertise in numerical modelling.

This position is full time (35 hours per week) and is a fixed-term appointment until 31 March 2023. The target start date is 1st October 2020.
