Hydrographer/ Multibeam Swath Bathymetry Technician

The Position

The appointee of this position will, under the direction of the lead swath technician, be responsible for the acquisition, processing, archiving and dissemination of multibeam sonar datasets acquired by the Marine National Facility (MNF) research vessel.

Specifically you will:

  • Operate and maintain the multibeam sonar(s), sub-bottom profiler and other geophysical instrumentation as required at sea on the MNF research vessel.
  • Process bathymetry datasets using CARIS HIPS/SIPS at sea, deriving and integrating GIS and mapping products as required by the scientific party.
  • Under the direction of the lead swath technician, process multibeam sonar bathymetry datasets using CARIS HIPS/SIPS onshore in Hobart.
  • Liaise with key stakeholders concerning all aspects of survey planning, survey, data collection and processing.
  • Assist with the processing and quality control of other datasets as required.

Salary:      $75K - $85K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will have:

  • The ability to obtain a Certificate of Medical Fitness to a standard required by the Australian Antarctic Division for seagoing operations and a Maritime Security Identification Card.
  • The ability to obtain a Certificate of Sea Safety Training issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in accordance with Marine Orders Part 3.
  • A willingness and ability to work at sea and to travel extensively in order to provide operational support in domestic or foreign ports.
  • Tertiary qualification and work experience in Spatial or Earth Sciences, Hydrographic Surveying or similar field.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of and experience in multibeam sonar theory, operation and data post-processing techniques.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of and experience in GIS, remote sensing software, MS Windows network administration skills and version control systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills. A demonstrated ability to produce manuals and/or reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a highly competent and committed team, to support the safe, effective and efficient achievement of voyage objectives.
  • Ability to provide a high level of technical support at sea up to 85 days per year on voyages which are typically 3 to 6 weeks duration. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
