PhD Position on Drainage Dynamics of
Closed Intermontane Basins

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position in the Department of Earth Sciences, ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The PhD research will focus on the landscape evolution of closed intermontane basins, including the mechanics of tectonic closure, the sediment fill process and fluvial integration. Study areas will include the active thrust belt of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes in northern Argentina, southern Bolivia, and the Alborz Mountains of northern Iran. Methods of study will include stratigraphic basin analysis, drainage basin analysis, GIS evaluation of river networks and landscape evolution using numerical models of river network formation and incision. The research will primarily use existing data, but some fieldwork could be involved. Numerical modeling will be focused on formation of structural barriers and basin filling and overspill processes.

A MSc (or equivalent degree) in earth sciences, or related field, at the start of the project is required. The successful candidate is expected to show broad earth-science interests and the ability to interpret/integrate geological and geophysical datasets. Familiarity with continuum mechanics and numerical methods is essential and experience with Matlab, FORTRAN or other programming languages is considered an advantage. Furthermore, high motivation for interdisciplinary earth science research and good communication skills in English are highly desired.

To apply, send application files by e-mail including (i) a motivation for the application, (ii) a statement of research interests in relation to the research aim described above, (iii) curriculum vitae including list of publications, (iv) a copy of MSc diploma and grade transcripts or equivalent, (v) a short abstract of the M.Sc. thesis or equivalent, and (vi) the names, e-mails, telephones and addresses of at least 2 referees. Applications will be evaluated immediately and considered until the position is filled.
