We are seeking a Research Scientist for a permanent position in our Circular Economy Solutions Unit to work with subjects related to active water treatment technologies for the extractive industry and selective recovery of metals from wastewaters.
You will be responsible for working on water treatment and metals recovery solutions for the extractive industry supporting the circular economy and sustainability of the mining sector. You will be involved in a variety of laboratory and field-based investigations, and your work will aim at generating new services for GTK. You will be involved in the preparation, implementation and management of national and international tenders and projects for our customers and jointly funded research proposals and projects as well as in developing new innovations together with relevant partners. Your task will also include writing progress reports and contributing to the writing of refereed journal articles.
You are expected to have at least M.Sc. degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, natural sciences or other related disciplines. A strong background in industrial water treatment technologies and related chemical processes as well as good understanding of water treatment solutions for the extractive industry and metal recovery techniques is needed. Practical experience in the fundamental laboratory procedures and analytical methods is required (e.g. colorimetric, potentiometric, spectrophotometric methods), since you are expected to organize and conduct laboratory and field work independently. In addition, you should have experience in research projects acquisition and demonstrated ability to attract external funding. Fluency in English is the minimum language requirement for the position and you are expected to have a proven ability to write progress reports and refereed journal articles.
Knowledge of the functioning of the extractive industry, established international networks, proven project management skills, and a recent PhD degree on relevant discipline for the task are considered beneficial for the applicant. Excellent teamwork skills and willingness to work also outside Finland are highly valued. An innovative and development-oriented approach with good motivation is highly preferred.

The position is located in the Circular Economy Solutions Unit at GTK office in Kuopio but also involves working at various field sites in Finland and abroad. The preferred starting date is 1st of October 2020 or upon agreement. Starting salary for the position will be between 3 430 - 4 140 euros/month.
