Postdoctoral researcher in Hydrogeology

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for postdoctoral researcher for hydrogeological studies for the Water Management Solutions unit in Espoo, Kuopio, Kokkola or Rovaniemi. You can also work remotely flexibly in Finland. You will be involved in hydrogeological research and services, where your work contains high-level research in own-funded Hyglo-research project and other research projects, as well.

You will be working with a Research Professor and a team of experienced researchers. The Water Management Solutions unit has ca. 30 researchers and five research assistants. Our broad research focus is on glaciogenic porous aquifers and fractured bedrock hydrogeology for potable water, managed aquifer recharge and waters in mining environments. In addition, flow, transport and reactive transport modelling, isotope geochemistry and method development are also a major part of our work among others.

You will be based in Water Management Team, which concentrates in waters in mining environments, but you will work with all the teams in the unit and be involved in all aspects of hydrogeology, as well.

What we expect

  • You have a PhD in hydrogeology or in a similar field of research
  • You have experience in at least one, but preferably several, following research fields:
    • 3D hydrogeological modelling (including hydrostratigraphy, as well as groundwater flow and transport modelling)
    • Groundwater - surface water interactions
    • Groundwater risk assessment and risk management in changing climate and environment
    • Hydrogeochemistry and groundwater dating
  • You have good skills in English, both written and oral and good communication skills
  • You are an adaptable team player and you can also work independently

We appreciate

  • Experience in working with glacigenic sedimentary environment and in Arctic or Boreal region
  • Experience in working with 3D modelling softwares such as LeapFrog and/or GroundHog, flow modelling tools as well as tools for statistical and/or spatial data analysis
  • Experience in working with waters in mining environment
  • You have been involved in successful research funding applications

Information about pay

The total salary at the beginning of employment will be EUR 4084 per month. The salary is determined by the competence of the person selected for the position.

The starting date is 1.9.2022 or by agreement. The position is fixed term. The position is part of the postdoctoral programme and therefore the position will be filled initially for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for a further 2 years.
