Senior / Principal Scientist - Flood & Water Management

About the role

The successful candidate will work in our water resources and environment team within the Floods and Water Management Group. You will collaborate closely with colleagues to support our clients in all aspects of water resource management, but with a particular focus on developing innovative solutions to adapting to current and future pressures including climate and population change, protecting the environment and increasing system and environmental resilience to shocks. You will have technical knowledge, experience and a strong interest in hydrology and water resources including the application and development of numerical models. The ability to lead teams and direct research in this field would be advantageous.

Responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking and supporting others with numerical modelling, data analysis and dealing with large datasets
  • Project management: working with UK government departments and agencies, water companies and others in the water industry

About you

We expect you to have experience in hydrology and water resource modelling ideally within the UK water resources industry, as well as an appreciation of environmental issues and an understanding of the challenges the industry faces. We will expect you to have practical experience of handling and analysing large data sets and working closely with colleagues to refine the analytical approaches. You are someone with good interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for this field. You enjoy discussing and presenting data within the team, other colleagues and the wider industry. You will know how to successfully communicate your findings with non-technical audiences in order to achieve the desired outcomes.

In addition, you can solve problems collaboratively and independently and consider yourself someone with high standards, but who is able to prioritise and shift focus onto other projects when required. In addition, you have experience with scripting languages, e.g. Python, R etc. Demonstrable expertise in statistical analysis and the development of web-based applications in this field is also of interest, as is experience of water quality modelling. You'll have a BSc in a relevant discipline e.g. Civil/Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography. An MSc, PhD or equivalent experience is desirable.
