Senior Hydrogeologist


Land & Water Resource Consultants Ltd (LWRC) was founded in 1979 and specialises in hydrogeological and hydrological work. From 1989 Land & Water Resource Consultants worked closely with Vatnaskil Consulting Engineers in the UK to expand the business and provide advanced numerical analyses and modelling solutions in the environmental and hydrological fields. Since 2008 the two companies have been part of the Mannvit Engineering group. Our work includes:

  • Advising our clients (food and drinks manufacturers, water companies, agricultural businesses, land agents and developers) on short, medium and long-term water resources / environmental aspects of their businesses;
  • Managing closed-loop and open-loop Groundwater Source Heat Pump (GSHP) projects from concept to commissioning throughout the UK;
  • Advising and representing clients in matters of water abstraction licensing and environmental permits;
  • Undertaking numerical modelling of hydrological and hydrogeological systems in support of water resource planning, environmental risk assessment, contaminated land studies and GSHP system design;
  • Provision of practical advice based on many years' practical experience in water well and borehole design, supervision of borehole construction, testing and hydraulic analysis of groundwater and surface water sources;
  • Hydrometric data collection and provision of advice on water and soil sampling and monitoring.

We are looking for a chartered geologist / civil engineer / scientist with at least five years UK experience in the fields of water resources, environmental impact or water supply. Ideally, the right person would also have experience in the design of Groundwater Source and Water Source Heat Pump (GSHP) systems.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Key responsibilities are:

  • Supporting the technical director (geothermal and energy) in all hydrological and hydrogeological aspects of shallow geothermal heating and cooling project development and delivery
  • To provide hydrological and hydrogeological expertise in support of our current groundwater source geothermal heating and cooling projects throughout the UK and support to our water resources work in general

Desirable candidate attributes:

  • You will have several years' experience working as a professional hydrologist / hydrogeologist for a consultancy or government agency in the UK
  • You will have a high level of competence in the use of groundwater flow and quality modelling. You will be familiar with 3D modelling of groundwater flow and contaminant transport using FEFLOW, MODFLOW and other modelling software including configuring, calibration and validation of models and their use in future forecasting scenarios
  • You will have experience of field hydrometry
  • You will have experience of contract supervision
  • You will have good interpersonal skills for dealing and meeting with clients and with the statutory authorities
  • You will have very good numeracy and IT skills and ideally also have programming skills
  • You will be familiar with the modelling of groundwater flow and heat transport in support of GSHP system design
  • You will be familiar with the manipulation and analyses of data and numerical model outputs using ArcGIS
  • You will have experience of project management and of ensuring adherence to quality procedures
  • You will be familiar with the design and supervision of field monitoring schemes to support hydrological/hydrogeological investigations
  • You will be familiar with the provision of technical analyses and in producing project reports
  • You will be able to provide direct client support; attend technical meetings and provide contractor supervision if necessary

ESSENTIAL

  • Educated to post graduate degree level in a scientific discipline with emphasis on hydrology / hydrogeology
  • Chartered Geologist / engineer / scientist status
  • A high level of competence in the use of groundwater flow and water quality models
  • Experience of contract supervision
  • Good interpersonal skills for dealing with clients and statutory authorities
  • Experience of field hydrometry
  • Proven technical report writing skills
