Water Resources Engineer and Hydraulic Engineer

Job Desciption:

Lynker Technologies, LLC has an exciting opportunity for a Water Resources Engineer and Hydraulic Engineer located in Tuscaloosa, AL.

A Water Resources Engineer and a Hydraulic Engineer are required to develop code for coupling the Extratropical Surge and Tide Operational Forecast System (ESTOFS)/ Advanced Circulation Model (ADCIRC) to the National Water Model (NWM) using Deltares D-FLOW. Working onsite at NOAA's National Water Center, a three person team will define the requirements for operating instances of NOAA's predictive framework within the context of the COASTAL Act's hindcast requirements. The work will also develop the software infrastructure to link the NWM to an ADCIRC-based coupled storm surge modeling system and ESTOFS through the Deltares D-Flow FM model. Water Resources Engineer/Hydraulic Engineer will work with a dedicated software engineer (i.e. a three person team) to complete this work.

While NOAA's current predictive framework provides environmental intelligence ahead of high-impacts events, it is not explicitly designed to act as a hindcast model (dubbed as the "Named Storm Event Model" (NSEM) within the COASTAL Act). The Team will define the requirements for operating instances of NOAA's predictive framework within the context of the COASTAL Act's hindcast requirements. The Team will also develop the software infrastructure to link the NWM to an ADCIRC-based coupled storm surge modeling system and ESTOFS through the Deltares D-Flow FM model.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience developing, calibrating and validating DFlow FM 1d/2d model developed, released and maintained by Deltares (https://www.deltares.nl/en/), including use of DFlow Flexible Mesh 1d domain linked to 2d domain
  • Use of NHDPlus GIS data sets and other bathymetric and topographic datasets
  • Using wind forcing into DFlow Flexible Mesh 1d/2d domain
  • Experience using NOAA's HRRR, NAM or GFS wind and hurricane track data sets as forcing
  • Capability to create new 1d systems of channels and link to 2D mesh using real sections, hydraulic structures and levees (from survey, GIS datasets, HEC-RAS, NHDPlus)
  • Ability to create inundation maps
  • Understanding of ADCIRC model and file structure to couple ADCIRC models (http://adcirc.org/) to other models
  • Familiarity with the National Water Model (http://water.noaa.gov) and/or underlying WRF-HYDRO framework (https://ral.ucar.edu/projects/wrf_hydro)
  • Familiarity with NOAA Environmental Modeling System (NEMS) framework to couple models (http://www.emc.ncep.noaa.gov/index.php?branch=NEMS), the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) infrastructure software and the National Unified Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC) infrastructure software to couple models
  • Must be highly motivated to work in and help foster a collaborative environment
