Researcher in Aquatic Biogeochemical Modelling

The position is in NIVA's Section for Catchment Processes, which is engaged in multidisciplinary projects related to biogeochemistry, surface quality modelling, water resource management and climate change assessments. The section is actively employed to systemise, investigatestudy, and disseminate information about complex aquatic environmental problems linked with water. The section is involved in national and international research projects, including several EU projects.

Candidates in fields of catchment biogeochemistry, aquatic geochemistry and limnology, with strengths in process-oriented modelling are invited to apply.

Strengthen and develop NIVA's expertise in understanding the biogeochemical processes controlling water quality in catchments, rivers and lakes. Participate in, and lead activities within on-going research projects, with a focus on, for example: i) biogeochemical processes, such as those controlling carbon and nutrients from headwaters to coastal waters, ii) water quality modelling and forecasting in lakes and reservoirs, and iii) ecosystem response to climate change. Acquire new projects in interplay with clients, users and research collaborators.

We seek candidates with advanced degrees in relevant scientific fields. Applicants with a Ph.D. degree will be preferred, but those with Masters degrees and relevant experience will also be considered.

  • The applicant should have a strong publication record for her or his career stage, with contributions to the fields of aquatic sciences, limnology, environmental modelling or biogeochemistry
  • Experience with the application of process-oriented models related to environmental science issues is beneficial
  • Experience with scripting language (e.g. MATLAB, R or Python) is advantageous
  • Experience with applied and contract research, including international projects
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • The ability to work analytically and in a structured way
  • The ability to utilise, adapt and develop existing approaches and tools to new problems
  • Proficiency in communicating with customers, users and research colleagues
  • The ability to work within inter-disciplinary teams and interface professionally with programmers and technical personnel
  • The ability to work with a variety of tasks and to change context efficiently.
NIVA offers:
  • Challenging and inspiring tasks at the leading national water research institute with a comprehensive international network of contacts
  • A head office at CIENS (The Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research) centrally located at the Oslo Innovation Centre near the University of Oslo
  • Stimulating, international work environment with highly skilled and dedicated employees
  • Competitive conditions and salaries, pension plans and insurance benefits.

Applicants might be evaluated and contacted before the application deadline. Application deadline is 5 January 2018. Women are encouraged to apply.
