Piteau Associates (www.piteau.com) is an International Earth Sciences consulting group offering geotechnical, hydrogeology, hydrology and geochemistry consulting services to the resource industry worldwide. Piteau's head office is in Vancouver, Canada, with branch offices in Canada, the USA, Peru, Chile, the UK and South Africa. Piteau Associates is well known in the international mining sector for our expertise in geotechnical and hydrogeological aspects of open pit and waste rock facility design. In 2016, Piteau established a dedicated Water Management Group which includes a team of highly experienced and internationally renowned hydrogeology, hydrology, and geochemistry professionals who offer an expanded service-range focused on all aspects of practical mine water management. As part of the continued expansion of this group, we are seeking candidates with appropriate qualifications, experience and motivation to fill Intermediate and/or Senior level hydrogeology and geochemistry positions in Johannesburg, South Africa and Shrewsbury, UK.

General requirements

  • BSc (Hons) (MSc level preferred) in Geology, Earth Sciences, Hydrogeology or a closely related field.
  • Practical experience in minerals sector consulting in hydrogeology, mine hydrology or environmental geochemistry (minimum 5 years for Intermediate candidates; minimum 10 years for Senior candidates).
  • Professional registration would be beneficial;
  • Strong organizational and team skills and project management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with ability to prepare, review and edit reports and other client deliverables. Fluency in Spanish and/or French would be highly advantageous.
  • Mobility and willingness to undertake international assignments, prospectively across all continents.

Hydrogeology positions

Key activity areas, in which suitably qualified hydrogeology candidates may hold experience, include:

  • Groundwater / hydrogeological investigations to support mining project EIA's or scoping, PFS and FS level studies.
  • Design of dewatering and depressurisation systems for open pit and underground mines.
  • Construction of evaluation/monitoring boreholes and production wells in varied geological environments
  • Seepage evaluation from existing or planned tailings or mine waste storage facilities
  • Planning/execution of hydraulic tests and interpretation of data
  • Numerical groundwater flow modelling (FEFLOW, MODFLOW, GWV, MINEDW, etc)

Geochemistry positions

Key activity areas, in which suitably qualified geochemistry candidates may hold experience, include:

  • Design and execution of static and kinetic testing investigations for acid-rock drainage / metal leaching assessments.
  • Numerical water quality modelling of mine facilities using software such as PHREEQC.
  • Construction of chemical mass balance models in conjunction with surface water balances (GoldSim).
  • Groundwater contaminant transport modelling.
  • Geochemical/water quality aspects of mine closure planning
