School of Planning, Architecture & Civil Engineering
PhD Studentship - Sediment / Pollutant interactions
The School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering, at Queen's University Belfast seeks to engage a post-graduate researcher (PhD student) to investigate geochemical processes influencing the fate and transport of diffuse contaminants in Irish River Basin Districts as part of the Irish Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Science, Technology, Research & Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) programme (2007-2013). The position will be based at Queen's University Belfast, but will require the researcher to visit field sites around the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and partner institutions in Dublin. Funding for this research is provided under the Irish Government's National Development Programme. The successful candidate will be eligible for a three-year studentship (£13,290 per annum for students commencing in 2009-10) and coverage of approved university tuition fees. The position is open to all European Union citizens.
The work will involve collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of Soil Scientists, Hydrologists Geologists, Hydrogeologists, Civil Engineers and Ecologists. The researcher will investigate the sources and transport of sediment and how it may influence the fate and transport of diffuse contaminants (nutrients, pesticides and pathogens) to surface water bodies. The position offers considerable field-based opportunities to gain experience in practical physical and chemical hydrology and geochemistry, as well as working with experienced modellers in synthesising field data.
Candidates should possess, or expect to obtain a 1st class or upper second class honours in Hydrology, Physical Geography, Environmental Science, Environmental Microbiology or a related discipline. A foundation in Soil Science, Hydrology and/or geochemistry is advantageous. Candidates should also hold a full clean driving licence. For further information, interested candidates should contact Dr. Marie Archbold of the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering, Queen's University Belfast by e-mail at m.archbold@qub.ac.uk.
