Job Description:

SRK are seeking a Graduate Consultant / Consultant level Hydrogeologist to join an experienced water team in the Cardiff office, on a permanent basis. As an SRK Hydrogeologist, you will have the opportunity to work internationally on projects such as mine dewatering design, slope depressurisation, groundwater baseline and impact assessment, water remediation and water supply.

The SRK UK water team are skilled at well installation, VWP installs, pumping, packer and spinner tests, numerical groundwater modelling, water quality analysis, contaminant plume modelling, and water balances, as well as having a deep understanding of hydrological systems in arctic, desert and tropical climates. This position offers the successful candidate an interesting and varied role with the potential to get involved with all aspects of project work, as described above.

Main Technical Responsibilities:

The work involved in undertaking this role may include the following activities, as well as other responsibilities as required:

  • Fieldwork: groundwater surveys, water quality sampling, drilling supervision and on-site hydrogeological testing and monitoring;
  • Monitoring and pumping well design;
  • Analysis of hydrogeological tests and data;
  • Use of numerical modelling techniques to assess a variety of common hydrogeological problems;
  • Hydrogeological input to project development studies, environmental assessments and mine operational support;
  • Proposal preparation and report writing;
  • Client liaison; and assisting with project management.

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent in Geoscience with a higher degree in Hydrogeology (if not taken as a first degree)
  • Excellent report and proposal writing skills requiring strong English language skills (verbal and written).
  • Strong communication skills
  • Effective organisation and time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Desire to travel

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with other software packages, particularly groundwater modelling software
  • Experience in mining and/or quarry water management
  • Previous experience of undertaking commercial hydrogeological or hydrological studies
  • A second language
  • Basic programming skills in Python or Visual Basic

Working Conditions:

Primarily office-based in Cardiff, however it is likely that frequent overseas travel will be necessary, involving working in a variety of climatic and geographic terrains in addition to working in various mining and mineral processing operations. As a rough guide, some 75% of working time will be spent in the Cardiff office with the remainder based overseas in various locations.

Travel to overseas sites will frequently involve flying, using international and internal airlines. Extensive road travel to site locations when overseas is also often necessary and road conditions can sometimes be poor, especially outside the major cities.

The visiting of mining operations or project sites will be done in accordance with the client's health and safety policies with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following the correct risk assessments.

SRK will provide specialist training in First Aid and dealing with situations that may be encountered during travel overseas, especially to remote areas.

Physical Requirements:

Site visits and field programmes can be physically demanding involving long periods of walking and standing, possibly some climbing and carrying of equipment and supplies.

Training / Continuing Professional Development:

It is the policy of SRK to provide employees with access to training, including ongoing training to improve performance and service to clients and to ensure ongoing development of the individual. SRK provides support for writing of technical papers on areas of relevant interest or ground-breaking work, international conference attendance and presentations and journal publications.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, (40 hours per week)
