The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of California, Irvine invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position beginning January 17, 2017.
The postdoctoral scholar is expected to work on research to model the hydro-geomorphological response of coastal lowlands in southern California during extreme flood events, to deepen understanding of the relative contribution and/or coupling of extreme events and anthropogenic activity (e.g., dredging, sediment placement, beach nourishment) on inter-annual coastal sediment dynamics at the regional scale, and to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers to identify best practices in sediment management, including use of modeling tools, for adapting to accelerating sea level rise in consideration of ecological, social, and economic factors. Background should include expertise in hydrodynamics, sediment transport, and computational modeling and familiarity with morphodynamics of riverine and coastal systems. Expertise in geographical information systems, flood risk management with nature-based features and green infrastructure, and use of Delft3D software is also preferred. Fluency in both English and Spanish is also desirable. The candidate is expected to write their research results in journal publications, attend project meetings and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers as needed for completion of the research.
This position requires a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Geosciences, Oceanography or a closely related field.
