The University of the Western Cape's Faculty of Natural Sciences offers education and research in a wide range of scientific disciplines. The Faculty's Department of Earth Sciences hosts the Environmental and Water Science (EWS) and Applied Geology (APG) programmes, and occupies state-of-the-art facilities in both of the new Life Sciences and Chemical Sciences buildings. The campus of the University of the Western Cape is conveniently located in the vicinity of Cape Town International Airport.

Senior Lecturer/Lecturer Hydrogeology

The Department seeks to appoint a dynamic, highly motivated academic with a passion for research, teaching and learning as well as community engagement. We are in search of a strong team player with excellent communication and networking skills. The ideal candidate has expertise in Physical Hydrogeology (e.g., numerical modelling and aquifer testing), Hydrochemistry (water quality, Isotope Hydrogeology/Isotope Geochemistry with experience in supervising respective laboratory facilities) and a sound knowledge in GIS.

Key Performance Areas

  • Develop and conduct cutting-edge research programmes in Hydrogeology;
  • Actively participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and curriculum development;
  • Actively recruit and supervise postgraduate (Masters and Doctoral) students;
  • Contribute to the academic administration activities of the department;
  • Raise research funds to independently conduct research programmes in Hydrogeology.

Minimum Requirements

  • At Lecturer level an MSc in a field related to Hydrogeology (a PhD would be a recommendation);
  • At Senior Lecturer level an PhD in a field related to Hydrogeology;
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating teaching and learning at the tertiary level;
  • A proven track record of postgraduate supervision;
  • A proven track record of acquiring research funding;
  • A proven track record of high quality research outputs (including publications in accredited journals) in Hydrogeology.
