The role

We are seeking to appoint an experienced and enthusiastic professional for the role of Geoarchaeology Manager to lead the Geoarchaeology team within the Geoservices directorate. This opportunity offers the chance to work as part of the dynamic Geoservices team, which together employs technical experts from a wide range of science disciplines to provide specialist input into to a wide range of archaeological projects and deliver a range of services to our clients.

Our Geoarchaeology team includes geoarchaeologists at all stages of their career with specialists of international standing in Holocene geoarchaeology, Palaeolithic archaeology, Pleistocene geoarchaeology, Marine geoarchaeology and submerged prehistoric landscapes. In this role you will have the autonomy to influence and promote continuous improvement and positive change within both the Geoarchaeology and wider Geoservices team.

People are key to our business and in this role you will be responsible for growing and managing the team, provide for their training, mentoring and coaching needs, and helping them to develop their skills. With a solid geoarchaeological skillset and knowledge base, you will be responsible for the creation, planning, management and safe delivery of high-quality projects, and will promote our services to existing clients and identify new business opportunities to develop and grow the business, working with the wider company to deliver these services.

About you

This will be both a challenging and rewarding role and we are looking for an ambitious individual with the aptitude and aspiration to develop the team and service.

We are looking for an applicant:

  • educated to at least degree level in an appropriate subject or to hold demonstrable experience to an equivalent level and ideally a post-graduate qualification in Geoarchaeology, Quaternary Science or a related discipline;
    • a publication record and industry recognition within your specialism;
    • with extensive experience with commercial practice;
    • be technically astute and have considerable experience in tendering, design, planning, management and delivery of projects;
    • with previous experience managing a team, with excellent communication skills;
  • have experience working routinely and effectively with clients, contractors, suppliers, planners, curators and other professionals;
  • a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of health & safety associated with fieldwork, preferably backed up with qualifications and accreditations;
  • knowledge of project management systems, or at least a fundamental understanding of the principles of project management a flexible, pragmatic, collaborative approach to work;
  • have membership of an appropriate accredited professional body and have a full UK Driving Licence.


Wessex Archaeology's geoarchaeology team operate nationwide from our regional offices in Salisbury, Sheffield, Meopham, Bristol, and Edinburgh. This position will be ideally based in Salisbury or Sheffield, although other locations will be considered for the right candidate.

Wessex Archaeology is a truly collaborative organisation, and the successful candidate will work with our project teams in all regions on some of the most significant and challenging heritage projects across the UK and beyond. A certain level of travel site and our other offices will be expected as part of this role.
