Scientific programmer: Climate model development (digital twins of the climate system) (m/f/d)

Background

The Climate Dynamics section at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany, invites applications for a scientific programmer in support of the development of the next-generation kilometer-scale climate model IFS-FESOM2. The successful candidate will work with leading European climate modellers, computing scientists and software engineers in the context of national (e.g. BMBF WarmWorld) and European projects (e.g., nextGEMS, https://nextgems-h2020.eu) on developing digital twins of the climate system in support of adaptation to climate change.

Tasks

• You will be part of a team responsible for the development, deployment and testing of kilometer-scale climate models, with a strong focus on the atmospheric model IFS (developed by ECMWF) and atmosphere-sea ice-ocean model coupling.
• More specifically, you will add climate forcing fields to the IFS, implement new IFS developments in the coupled model system (e.g., related to I/O and GPU-readiness), and add efficient nudging capabilities.
• The development of setups for atmosphere-only simulations in support of time slice experiments, and implementation and optimization of software solutions that facilitates efficient external coupling between the IFS and FESOM2 will also be important tasks.
• All developments will be thoroughly tested on the latest European HPC systems (e.g., LUMI - the first pre-exascale supercomputer of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking).
• Finally, you will join a team responsible for running kilometer-scale simulations on different HPC systems.

Requirements

• A master in one or more of the following fields is required: computer science, mathematics, data sciences, physics, meteorology, oceanography, climate sciences, or related.
• A PhD in any of these fields would be an advantage.
• Demonstrated skill/proficiency in FORTRAN and/or C/C++ and fluency in English are further requirements.
• We follow good software development practices and, therefore, expect candidates to have hands-on experience with version control (e.g., git), and creating documentation.

Moreover, having several of the following skills would be distinct advantage:

• Development, running and evaluation of climate models and especially atmospheric models (e.g., IFS),
• Development and application of nudging,
• Running complex codes on HPC systems, including experience with nix and bash scripting, and
• Parallel programming including MPI and/or OpenMP and heterogeneous CPU/GPU systems (e.g., OpenACC)

This is a full-time position, limited to 27 months and advertised subject to availability of funding. It is also suitable for part-time employment. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level 14. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
